My pedometer seems faulty and is clocking steps when I’m sitting still. What do I do?
Firstly check it is on the non-sensitive setting, which is on the bottom left hand corner of the pedometer screen. As pedometers register movement we would advise you to remove your pedometer whilst sitting, this will increase accuracy. If problems persist, please contact Healthy Steps administration line on 0800 100 257 (for New Zealand subscribers) or email healthysteps@sanitarium.co.nz
I have walked 4 kilometers, but it has registered 5.5 kilometers. Why is this the case?
Pedometers are very sensitive to movement and if they are not attached correctly they can give inaccurate readings. Make sure the pedometer is attached on your waist, close to the body, directly above the knee and horizontal to the ground. This position will be accurate for most people. There is a simple test you can do to see if this is the most accurate position for you. Reset the pedometer to zero and then count 50 steps. Check to see what the reading is on your pedometer. If it reads about 47-53 steps that you do not need to change its position. However a small proportion of people will need to change the position of the pedometer to get accurate readings. Gradually move the pedometer along your waistline towards the outside of your body. Continue to do the 50 step test until you find the most accurate place.
Further Pedometer Problem Solving Tips:
The pedometer is a valid measure of exercise but there are many factors that can reduce their accuracy. Other things to consider are:Less accurate when walking slowly (less than 4km per hour). Less accurate with an uneven walking gait. An accurate stride length has to be entered into the pedometer. Pedometer needs to be kept close to the body. You will get inaccurate readings if it is placed on loose clothing. In spite of these limitations, pedometers are still one of the most accurate and reasonably priced tools for measuring physical fitness.
