The recommended number of steps we should do each day varies depending on our age group and goals, as shown below.

Points to note

10,000 steps for adults:

  • is about 8 kilometres.
  • could burn approximately 1620 - 1680 kJ per day.
  • is achievable when working towards a more active lifestyle which includes a 30 minute walk each day.
  • can be achieved quicker by doing more intense activity - moderatly intense activity for 10 minutes is equivalent to 1000 steps and high intensity activity for 10 minutes is equivalent to 2000 steps.

Easy ways to increase steps:

  • Walk to the next bus stop - if you take the bus try getting off a stop earlier than usual and walk the extra distance. Alternatively park your car slightly further from your office and walk.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator - even just a few flights will boost your daily steps goal.
  • Don't take short cuts - walk the long way around.
