Economising when buying dairy and dairy alternative products

  • glass_of_milk.jpgUse milk powder or UHT milk when baking or where it will be less likely to be noticed. Use fluid milk for drinking and in hot drinks or on cereal – use fat-reduced or trim milks to ensure a lower saturated fat intake and higher calcium levels. Budget brands have similar nutritional quality as other branded milks.
  • Buy block cheese and grate it yourself for recipes (versus pre-grated). Only purchase cheese on special and use the lower fat varieties like Edam. Parmesan cheese, although quite expensive is very strong tasting, so you don’t need as much.
  • In cheese sauce and recipes where cheese is used, try some alternatives.
  • Make your own cottage cheese, yoghurt and butter milk.
