Shopping strategies that save money

  • supermarket1.jpgShop less. If you shop frequently you will find that you spend more than if you only shop weekly or fortnightly. Often if you pop into the supermarket to get something, you will impulse buy!
  • Visit different supermarkets in your area. If you live or work near more than one supermarket, shop at both. Often stores will have discount prices on different items.
  • Purchasing healthy convenience foods in your supermarket shopping – for lunches and snacks - will reduce your overall food bill (rather than purchasing morning tea or buying lunch).
  • Choose the cheaper variety. Unit prices for food are displayed, so compare costs between brands and different sized packages. Divide the total price by the number of grams to come up with the unit price per gram.
  • Choose generic brands whenever possible.
  • Watch for mistakes at the checkout line and always check your receipt and change.
  • If possible leave your children and partner at home, as they can influence you to buy unnecessary items!
  • Don’t shop when hungry or when in a rush as you buy unnecessary items and don’t have the time to compare prices.
  • Check expiry dates. The newer stuff is usually at the back of the shelf, pick these as they will last longer and you won’t end up throwing things out.
