Some tips on buying fruit and vegetables

  • fruit and vegetables.jpgCheck the pricing between single unit produce and bagged produce when purchasing, as it may be better value to purchase them either way. By handpicking what you want you can often get better quality too.
  • Buy fruit and vegetables from the market or local green grocer, as they are generally cheaper than supermarkets.
  • Always buy seasonally, for best flavour and prices.
  • Compare fresh, frozen and canned, and buy the cheaper variety; they are equally nutritious.
  • When buying canned foods, choose those that are packed in juice or have low-added salt.
  • If you have fruit left over, rather than wasting it, stew and bottle it, make jam or chutney, freeze or dry it for future use.
  • Select the most colourful fruit and vegetables – they all have different phytochemicals that are beneficial for us – so variety is key.
  • Grow your own, seeds are cheap and you don’t need a lot of space to have a variety of veggies. Gardening is a great form of physical activity and it can be fun for the whole family to join in. Give the children their own patch to work on – they will be more inclined to eat the veggies, if they have grown them!
  • Buy vegetables and fruits when in season and freeze for later use – capsicum, ginger, garlic, leeks and many other foods work really well.
  • Start a herb garden.
