What's My Skin Telling Me?
Perfect, blemish-free skin is something at the top of everyone’s wish list. We often look at our skin in relation to beauty, but what is it telling us about our health? Our skin can sometimes be an indicator that there is an underlying condition, deficiency or excess.
What are some of the signs?
Pale pink skin on the inside of your eyelids:
What could it mean? Iron deficiency anemia
What should I do? If you are concerned, speak with your doctor about getting your iron levels tested. If it’s linked with iron deficiency, then increasing your intake of iron rich foods including green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, red meat, seafood and poultry will help.
Small yellow bumps around your eyes:
What could it mean? High cholesterol
What should I do? Your blood cholesterol levels can be a predictor of an increased risk of heart disease, so it’s important to ask your doctor to check your cholesterol regularly. In many cases balanced eating and a healthy lifestyle can lower cholesterol levels.
The skin on the inside of your mouth is dry:
What could it mean? Dehydration
What should I do? Drinking 6-8 glasses of fluid everyday is essential for good health. Water is the best choice, but fruit juices, clear soup and herbal tea also count.
