Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are a common problem in children because of the way they cut their nails and poorly fitted shoes.

Since children grow so fast, their shoes don’t fit them well for very long. They are either too big, forcing their toes to instinctively grip for balance, creating pressure at the corners of the nail; or they are too tight, and push the skin into the nails creating an ingrown toenail.

How can Healthy Steps Podiatrists help you?

  • We can teach you how to maintain and cut your children’s nails properly
  • We can remove the ingrown nail section and tidy the area where the problem is.
  • We can assess their footwear and teach you the best way to fit their shoes.
  • If necessary, we can perform minor surgery under local anaesthetic and permanently remove the part of the nail growing into the skin. A chemical may also be applied if there has been a history of recurring ingrown toenails to prevent the problem from occurring again.
